Energy Rating (ER)

A composite score combining solar heat gain, heat loss and air leakage. Higher ER values generally indicate better overall energy performance in Canadian climates.

U-Value

Measures heat transfer through the window assembly. Lower U-Values indicate better insulation performance and warmer interior glass surfaces in winter.

SHGC

Measures how much solar heat enters through the glass. Different SHGC levels may be beneficial depending on orientation and climate — higher for passive winter warmth, lower for summer heat control.

Why Triple-Pane

Compared with double-pane, triple-pane assemblies typically improve:

  • Thermal comfort near the window
  • Interior glass temperature during winter
  • Condensation resistance in cold weather
  • Overall energy efficiency
  • Whole-building thermal performance
  • Acoustic performance in mid frequencies

Performance ratings shown are based on testing recognized by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and include Energy Rating (ER), U-Value, and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) — the industry-standard metrics used by NRCan and ENERGY STAR® Canada. Values are derived from certified product testing of Trust Build window systems and may vary by size, configuration and glass package.

Installation Methods

How Trust Build installs your windows

Installation quality is as important as glass performance, Energy Rating (ER), U-Value and SHGC. A premium window installed poorly will underperform a mid-tier window installed correctly. Trust Build is an installation-first company focused on proper building-envelope integration — here are the four methods we use and when each one is the right choice.

Brick-to-Brick Installation

Full Removal to Studs

The existing window, frame, jambs and interior casing are removed to the stud opening. The opening is vacuum cleaned and protected with Blueskin membrane. The new window, supplied with brickmould and jamb extension, is shimmed and secured to the studs, insulated with low-expansion foam and sealed with red tape over the foam. New wood or snap-in vinyl interior casing and exterior capping complete the installation.

  • Allows inspection and preparation of the stud opening
  • Blueskin membrane and low-expansion foam at the perimeter
  • New brickmould, jamb extension and interior casing
  • Exterior capping completes the outside finish

Best for: Homeowners replacing worn frames who want the full opening cleaned, membraned, insulated and refinished.

Stud-to-Stud Installation

Full Reconstruction

Full removal to the studs for openings that are compromised, need structural repairs or rebuilding, or must be resized.

  • Allows structural repairs
  • Allows resizing of openings
  • Allows window-to-door conversions
  • Provides complete access to the building envelope
  • Ideal for egress and major renovation projects

Best for: Enlarging windows, window-to-door conversions, structural repairs, egress window projects and major remodeling projects.

Retrofit Installation

Insert Installation

The new window is inserted into the existing frame only when that frame is sound, square and dry. Existing interior finishes are preserved. Home age or brick veneer alone does not qualify an opening for retrofit.

  • Faster installation
  • Lower installation cost
  • Minimal disruption
  • Preserves the existing interior finish

Best for: Openings whose existing frame is sound, square and dry.

Split-Frame Installation

Vinyl Insert Method

A vinyl insert method used when the existing jamb and casing can be preserved. Suitability depends on the condition of the existing frame and opening.

  • Vinyl insert installation
  • Can preserve suitable existing jamb and casing
  • Condition-dependent recommendation

Best for: Vinyl window replacements where the existing jamb and casing are suitable to keep.

Not every home qualifies for retrofit or split-frame

Before recommending an installation method, Trust Build evaluates existing frame condition, moisture exposure, structural integrity, air leakage and the overall condition of the opening. The right method is determined after on-site inspection to ensure long-term performance and durability — not chosen on price alone.

Installation quality is equally important as glass performance, Energy Rating (ER), U-Value and SHGC values.

FAQ

Window Replacement — Frequently Asked Questions

There's no single answer — the best style depends on the room, exposure, and your priorities. Casement and tilt-and-turn windows provide the tightest energy seal and maximum ventilation. Picture windows offer the best thermal performance with no moving parts. Slider and hung windows suit traditional or heritage-style homes. Our specialists recommend the right style for every room and back the recommendation with the certified performance numbers when they quote your project.
Double-pane windows have two glass layers with one insulating gas chamber — a solid cost-effective upgrade for most Ontario homes. Triple-pane windows add a third glass layer and second gas chamber for superior insulation, noise reduction, and energy savings — the gold standard for Ontario winters. We provide the certified ER, U-Value and SHGC figures for both packages so you can compare them on data, not guesswork.
Yes — ENERGY STAR certified window options are available for Ontario's climate zone. A certified window meets minimum thermal performance requirements for our region and may qualify you for rebates through Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program.
Most standard window replacements are completed in a single day. A full-home replacement of 10 to 15 windows typically takes one to two days. Our crew handles everything — removal, installation, cleanup, and disposal.
