Retrofit Window Installation

What is Retrofit Installation?

Retrofit installation (also known as insert installation) involves replacing the existing window while preserving the original interior and exterior trims. This method is ideal when the window frame is in good condition and minimal disruption is preferred.

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Careful Removal

Our installer removes the existing glazing and sashes while keeping the:

  • Exterior brickmould
  • Interior wood casing (trim)
  • Jamb extension (ledge)

2. Shimming and Leveling

The new window is inserted into the existing frame and aligned using shims.

What is shimming?
Shimming ensures the window sits level and secure using small wedges that eliminate gaps and prevent warping.

3. Securing the Window

The window is fastened with screws and sealed with low-expansion spray foam to improve insulation and reduce drafts.

4. Interior and Exterior Finishing

Once secured, the installer finishes both the inside and outside surfaces.

Exterior Finish

Custom Aluminum Brickmould Preparation

The installer measures the opening and fabricates a custom aluminum brickmould to cover the gap.

Installation and Caulking

The aluminum brickmould is installed and sealed with color-matched caulking for a polished finish.

Customization: Choose from matching or contrasting colors for aluminum and caulking — all confirmed during the planning stage.

Color Options

Standard color is white. Custom colors like commercial brown or black require additional fabrication. We offer a wide range of aluminum colors to suit your design needs.

What is Custom Aluminum Brickmould?

It’s a decorative and protective trim that covers the gap between the new window and your home’s exterior. It seals the installation and enhances curb appeal.

Interior Finish

Shimming and Insulating

Shims are used to level the window and spray foam fills any remaining space to ensure energy efficiency.

Trim and Caulking

Interior caulking is applied where the jamb extension meets the new window. If needed, we also install quarter-round molding for a clean look.

Summary

Our goal is a clean, professional, and energy-efficient finish. Every step — from precision shimming and insulation to aluminum capping and clean caulking — is handled with care.

Note: For doors and blinds, we follow a similarly meticulous process — from measurements and framing to insulation and finishing. Details can be provided upon request.
