FAQ: What Is Stud-to-Stud Window Installation?

Q: What is stud-to-stud installation?

Stud-to-stud installation is a full-frame window replacement method where the entire existing window—including all trim, extensions, and frame—is removed down to the structural wall studs. This approach is best when full insulation, maximum energy efficiency, or replacement of rotted/outdated framing is required.

Q: What are the steps involved in stud-to-stud installation?

1. Full Window Removal

The installer removes all parts of the old window system, including:

  • Exterior brickmould
  • Window frame
  • Jamb extension (interior ledge)
  • Interior casing (trim attached to the wall)

This exposes a fully open cavity between the exterior brick (or siding) and the interior drywall.

2. Cleaning and Preparation

  • Exposed studs are vacuumed and cleaned for proper adhesion and insulation.
  • Old caulking is removed from the brick or siding.
  • Blue-skin waterproof membrane is applied and sealed to protect against moisture.

3. Installing the New Window

  • The new window (typically without attached brickmould) is centered in the opening.
  • Shims are placed at the bottom corners to ensure level placement.
  • Once aligned, the window is screwed directly into the wall studs for a stable, lasting fit.

4. Insulation

  • Low-expansion spray foam is applied from both the inside and outside between the frame and studs to maximize insulation and block drafts.

5. Exterior Finishing

  • The installer measures the gap between the new frame and brick/siding.
  • Custom aluminum capping (also known as aluminum brickmould) is bent to size and installed.
  • Color-matched exterior caulking is applied to seal the installation and prevent moisture intrusion.

6. Interior Finishing

  • Red construction tape is applied to seal and protect insulated foam inside the wall.
  • New interior trim (casing) is installed for a fresh, clean look.
  • Final interior caulking is applied for a professional finish.

Q: Why choose stud-to-stud installation?

  • Ideal when old frames are rotted or damaged
  • Allows for complete insulation coverage, inside and out
  • Maximizes energy efficiency
  • Offers a completely refreshed appearance inside and out
