Brick-to-Brick Window Installation Guide

FAQ: What Is Brick-to-Brick Window Installation?

Q: What is brick-to-brick installation?

Brick-to-brick installation is a full-frame window replacement method where the entire existing window—including the frame, interior trim, and jamb extension—is removed. The new window is installed directly into the wall studs, allowing for maximum insulation and energy efficiency. This method is ideal when the old frame is damaged or when a complete refresh is desired.

Q: What are the steps involved in brick-to-brick installation?

1. Full Removal of Existing Components

The installer removes all parts of the old window assembly, including:

  • The exterior brickmould
  • The window frame
  • The interior casing (trim)
  • The jamb extension (ledge)

This exposes the entire rough opening from brick to drywall.

2. Cleaning and Preparation

  • The exposed studs (between brick and drywall) are cleaned and vacuumed.
  • Old caulking on the brick is removed to ensure a proper seal.
  • A blue-skin membrane is applied around the perimeter for moisture protection.

3. Installing the New Window

  • The new window, usually with attached brickmould, is placed and centered in the opening.
  • Shims are inserted into the bottom corners to level the window.
  • Once aligned, the window is anchored securely with screws into the studs.

What is shimming? Shimming ensures the window is perfectly level and prevents distortion during and after installation.

4. Insulating the Frame

  • Low-expansion spray foam is applied between the window frame and studs for insulation.
  • Once cured, red construction tape is used to seal and protect the foam-insulated areas.

5. Finishing Interior and Exterior

  • Interior: New trim (interior casing) is installed around the window.
  • Exterior: Caulking is applied around the brickmould to seal the perimeter and finalize the exterior finish.

Q: Why choose brick-to-brick installation?

  • Best option for maximum energy efficiency
  • Ideal if the existing frame is damaged or rotted
  • Allows full insulation between the window and wall
  • Provides a completely fresh look, inside and out
